I am an admirer of Jane Austen’s works. After becoming a fan of ‘Pride and Prejudice’, I decided to read ‘Sense and Sensibility’. Like any other book by Jane Austen, it took some time for me to remember and get to know all the characters. Once I got past the first 50 pages I knew that it is another masterpiece from Austen.
Just like the readers love Elizabeth from Pride and Prejudice, we start admiring Elinor for her calmness and regard for others. I could find some traits of Wickham in Willoughby though they were different. There are not many accounts of balls and all the luxury in this book unlike the other.
Sense and Sensibility is more about poverty than luxury. It is a more serious account of the hopes and sorrows of two young women in love. Colonel Brandon goes from ‘what is the purpose of this person in the story’ to ‘where is he at that time’ kind of person. Edward Ferrars has all the integrity and sense as to deserve Elinor. Mrs. Jennings and the Middletons form the general setting for the whole story and happenings.
The book beyond doubt has all the brilliance of Austen. I admire her ease in the usage of such vocabulary and the way she plays with words; so that even the smallest of emotions are conveyed effectively to the reader. That is what makes her a genius. She creates some really admirable characters. She slowly brings in different accounts for each character and finally creates the whole picture in our mind just like we know them in person. Her attention to detail is always perfect.
I recommend reading this book since even though it hasn’t all the humor as Pride and Prejudice, it is a more realistic account of the uncertainties with regard to love and marriage.
